Towards fossil free cities – Emission assessment of food and resources consumption with the FEWprint carbon accounting platform

Current urbanization rates concentrate the ever growing demand for food, energy and water (FEW) resources particularly in cities, making them one of main drivers greenhouse gas emissions. The FEW nexus integrative approach offers a potential framework sustainable resource management cities. However, existing evaluation tools are limited application often inadequate. This is primarily due to intricacy, tools’ operational complexity and/or need input comprehensive data that unavailable users. Having outlined these current gaps, this paper introduces FEWprint, an integrated carbon accounting platform provides accessible process nexus-based evaluations urban areas. spreadsheet-based employed calculate consumption-based footprint derived from food consumption, thermal/electrical use, car fuel demand, management, domestic waste processing. A comparative assessment between six different communities reveals significant differences total annual sector impact shows emissions ranging 993Kg/cap∗yr 1366Kg/cap∗yr Amsterdam Tokyo respectively, but also least deviating all considered sectors. holistic inventory will serve as baseline future farming strategies design proposals be tested.
